About Lugano
Located at The Barnyard in Carmel-by-the-Sea since 1995, Lugano Swiss Bistro has long brought the flavors of Switzerland and southern Germany to the Monterey Bay. Founder and Chef Andre Lengacher, a native of Graubünden, created the restaurant to share traditional Alpine dishes with the community. He named Lugano after the beautiful city in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino—his mother’s birthplace—reflecting the family roots and heritage behind the menu. Since its opening, the bistro has been known for classic Swiss favorites like rich, communal fondue and perfectly prepared schnitzel, served in a warm and welcoming European-style setting.
Today, Lugano Swiss Bistro continues its tradition of hospitality under the ownership of Marco Chavelas, who helped open the restaurant in 1995 and was part of the original team for more than a decade. With a deep connection to the restaurant’s history, Marco carries forward the same commitment to authentic food, friendly service, and the cozy atmosphere that guests have loved for years.
